COLBOURNE COLLEGE
Department of Communication Studies
Communication as an academic discipline focuses on how people create and share meaning within and across
a variety of contexts, cultures, channels, and media.   Employers consistently rank communication skills as first
among qualities they seek in future employees. By understanding the communication process, students can
better prepare themselves for living and working in our increasingly diverse and complex society.

Students are encouraged to incorporate internships and practical field experiences in their Degree plans.  The
field experience may or may not be credit bearing, but are considered important to the learning process.

Careers
Students who major in Communication have a wide range of career options available to them after graduation.

What is Communication Studies?
Communication Studies (CMS) is the study of communication in relationships. These relationships can range
anywhere from interpersonal to organizational. CMS majors are given the skills and knowledge they need to
apply to their chosen career paths. Each student is encouraged to decide what that career path may be
through internships, career exploration, and interaction with faculty.

A minimum of 65 credit hours are required for the Associate Degrees awarded by the School of Arts
and Sciences.

Candidates for the Associate Degrees must complete the requirements of the General Education
Curriculum, which covers four major areas of study
